A True DJ Story
I am a club DJ. A few months ago, in one of the local clubs where my other friend DJ is a resident, I was invited to be a guest DJ. Everything was flowing well, beats banging, crowd getting worked up.
And then my friend DJ handled the decks.
For his second tune, he slam-mixed a hot tune (during that time) to get the crowd more pumped up. And it worked. Clubbers were screaming. You could actually feel the energy rising.
Then it happened.
During the part of the song where the chorus would have been playing, I noticed something different. Only the instrumentals were being heard from the speakers. And it was actually the crowd singing the tune, instead of the vocals from the song. Crowd energy was at its peak because of this!
Now, being a DJ, I am usually knowledgeable of the various versions and release of different tunes, especially if they're as hot as this one. But I was absolutely sure that the version of the tune that my friend was playing was not one of those that can be bought commercially, or even downloaded from the internet. I, like my other DJ pals, usually play around with tunes by remixing them with audio editing software to create our own version of some tunes. But to be able to rip the vocals away from a sample was simply impossible.
So by the end of his set, I went and asked him about that particular tune and where he got it. He just smiled and told me that he created it.
Bullshit! I didn't believe that he knew how to make hip hop beats from scratch.
No way he could have created that! With what?
Buying Hip Hop Beats Online
So I tried researching. At first, I thought that he could have bought the instrumental beats online. And that would have probably cost him around 20 to 30 bucks. And knowing how much of a cheapskate that DJ friend of mine was, there was no way he was gonna pay that amount of money just for one beat.
And why would he pay for something that he could only use for a limited amount of time. When that tune goes out of style, that tune he bought would just go to his archives. There goes the 30 bucks.
So instead of buying that beat, he must have really created it just as he said. Okay, but how? He really probably knew how to make hip hop beats. But what software did he use? The sound was studio quality. How much did he spend for the hardware and software of his beat making set up?
The Search For The Elusive Tool To make Hip Hop beats:
The Hip Hop Beat Maker
So I narrowed down my search to those beat making softwares. I was able to find quite a few. From the free ones, to the ones costing a hefty 200 bucks, I tried them all. All in search for that elusive tool that my friend used for that single freakin' hot beat!
As expected, the free ones were basically for kids. You could not do anything with them except create loops. And the ones costing 100 bucks upwards were either too complicated to learn, required you to work on your tunes online, or simply lacked the quality that I was looking for. Imagine, they were using MP3s as samples.
MP3s as samples?! What the heck were they thinking?
For those who are not familiar with the difference between the different types of music formats, the MP3 format, while widely accepted now as the universal format of storing your music in your iPod or MP3 Player, is used primarily because of its file size. When you compare MP3 to the WAV files of the CD, they are just a fraction of the size. And the reason for that is compression. But in terms of quality, WAV files are lossless. I know I'm getting a bit technical about this. But the point is - you lose quality when you save music in MP3 format.
So using MP3 as samples for these beat making softwares was simply a joke. You do not believe me? Do this experiment.
Choose a song from one of your CDs . Any song. Rip it into MP3 format. Then after ripping it into MP3, convert that MP3 back to WAV, the original format of the song in the CD. Then rip that WAV into MP3 once again. And finally, convert the MP3 to WAV once again. Now, listen to that final WAV file that you produced. Compare it to the original song from the CD. If you do not notice the major stepdown in quality, then either you're going deaf, or you should go and replace your audio equipment.
How To Make Hip Hop Beats For Less Than $30
Anyway, back to my search for the ultimate beatmaker. In the course of my search, I came across DUBTurbo thru this website. But I was already quite cautious in believing the various marketing hype found in product websites. So I tried researching for reviews from users of DUBTurbo. And I was quite impressed with the reviews and upon knowing the different things that one can do with this nifty software. It was certainly possible to make hip hop beats with this software.
Could this be the software that I was looking for?
It costs only $29.95. It was actually a redflag. Although I was impressed with the things I read, I was still asking myself how can a product costing less than 30 bucks deliver those impressive things. But I still decided to give it a try. It was just less $29.95 anyway. Almost the same cost as a downloadable beat available online.
And it proved to be a very wise decision for me.
***Warning: This Beat Maker Is Addictive
I decided to purchase DUBTurbo one slow Sunday evening. And one of the nice things about it is that you can readily download the installer right after you pay for it. Installing it wasn't a problem (even for a non-techie like me). And after installing it, I immediately started playing with it.

That was kinda like what happened to me that particular Sunday evening. Right after dinner, I was already glued in my seat in front of my PC playing and discovering all the cool features that the software is packed with. I watched and read all the instructional materials that cam with the software package. And in no time, I was already creating my first beat. Then, my second beat. Then, my third. It was as if I naturally knew how to make hip hop beats all along.
I got really hooked up into this software and what it can do that I stayed up until 5 in the morning. Man, this software can be really addictive. Just as I was still creating one beat, another idea for a wicked beat pops up in my head. And I just couldn't contain my excitement with all the creative juices flowing in my body. I knew this was the kind of addiction successful music icons must have possessed.
